Rice Cereal and Rolling Over

We tried the rice cereal this weekend for the first time. The first day we tried it we made the mistake of waiting until the afternoon when the girls were simply too tired to be interested. They were really fussy, and we ended up quitting before they were able to take more than a few bites. The next day (I think this was Sun. I have a lot of problems remembering details nowadays.), we tried again in the morning after they drank their bottle and played for a while. As you can see, Emma was not too sure if she liked it or not. I think more of the cereal ended up on their faces than in their tummies. By the end of the feeding they were both attempting to swallow more, but they don’t quite have the hang of it yet. This morning, I fed Addison a little more. When she saw me bring the bowl over she got a big smile on her face so I assume that means she likes the cereal or she likes all the ridiculous faces I make to keep this experience fun. Emma skipped it this morning because she was too tired after playtime. I will try it with her later today. We are just doing one feeding a day until they learn how to swallow well.

Emma learned how to roll over on Friday. She looked kind of shocked after she did it. She finally did it for the second time this morning. I didn’t know it would take her so long to remember how to do it again. She lies on her tummy and stretches her arms and legs and kind of rocks on her belly. Then she gets frustrated when she can’t do it again. Addison shouldn’t be too far off from her sister. She is getting much better at lifting her shoulders and head when on her tummy. Tummy time really wears them out though! I guess I need to start keep the camera around during tummy time so I won't miss Addison's first time rolling over.

It also seems they have digressed a little with their sleeping through the night. They are waking up more and not sleeping as long between their feedings. They still only have one bottle during the middle of the night, but now they are waking up closer to 1 or 2 AM instead of 3 or 4 AM. We are also finding that we are making more visits into their room to replace the pacifier. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like if we never gave them a pacifier in the first place. I long for the days that I could get an entire night of sleep with no interruptions! I told Brian this morning that I probably need to accept that those days are over.

Routine

The girls have been working on getting back into their routine this week after we traveled to Florida. I had a couple of nights with very little sleep since Addison thought she should wake up every few hours or sometimes minutes. When Brian got back in town he took over the night shift so I could get some sleep! They are almost back on their normal nighttime schedule, which looks something like this: eat around 5:00 PM, bath, another small top off bottle, rock/snuggle, bed around 6-6:30 PM. They are getting back to sleeping until about 3-4 AM and waking up occasionally in between for their pacifier. They wake up for the day anywhere between 5 and 6:30 AM. It’s weird because typically they trade off on which one wakes up during the night, some nights its Emma and sometimes it’s Addi. This week it’s been Addi.

(Emma just loves to stick out her tongue these days!)

(Addison doesn't stick her tongue out often.)

(She has been working on finding her thumb.)

The girls are almost 17 weeks old now. Emma especially has taken an interest in watching us eat. She started this at my mom’s house. She watched her eat a piece of pizza. She watches me eat my breakfast or lunch if she is awake. Last night when Brian came home from work he was refueling on trail mix before the marathon we like to call bedtime routine. Emma was smacking her lips and watching her daddy eat. Brian let her lick a dried peach. Apparently she liked it because she continued to try to “eat it”. So this weekend we are taking the plunge and trying the rice cereal. We’ll take some pictures and post them next week.

(Addison gets so mad when I try to make her sit for a picture! Emma working on finding that thumb.)

Not much else is going on around here. It is still too cold to do a whole lot outside, Brian is traveling every week, and I’m still trying to get the girls on a schedule.

I also wanted to ask a question to anyone that has experience with twins. Have you noticed that one twin reaches milestones a couple of weeks before the other? We have noticed that with our girls. Emma seems to be about two weeks ahead of Addison on most things.

Emma is getting good at holding that head up.

and trying to sit up (with support of course)!
